NFL could add additional weeks to regular season

According to a source familiar with the NFL's scheduling scenarios, when the league decided Sunday morning not to play Broncos-Patriots on Monday night, they debated an indefinite postponement, which would essentially have put the "Week 18" scenario in play.

Instead, the Broncos-Patriots game was moved to next Sunday -- and a contingency plan involving eight games, eight teams and six switched bye weeks was implemented. However, once a team that's already had its bye can't play in a given week, Week 18 will likely become a reality.

This could happen as soon as Monday morning. If positive tests among the Buffalo Bills and/or Tennessee Titans force Tuesday's game between those teams to be postponed -- and given that the Titans have already had their bye -- the game would be indefinitely postponed (potentially pushed to Week 18).

In a Week 18 scenario, the league would likely only play those games if they had a significant impact on the playoffs. It's possible that if the game was, say, to decide whether a team was the fifth or seventh seed, the NFL would elect not to play it.

That said, Week 18 is likely a reality, and, depending upon future postponements -- and with the possibility that a team could be impacted more than once (after having lost its bye week) -- there could even be a Week 19 added.

So, what would this mean for the postseason? It could be delayed, obviously. The league could save a week by deciding to cancel the Pro Bowl and play the Super Bowl one week after the conference championship games (which has been done before).

As for Super Bowl LV? Well, it'll be much easier to change the date of the game than in other years, when hotels are booked far in advance and legions of fans from outside the area are in play. The Super Bowl could be delayed one, two or three weeks.

Bottom line: Expect at least one week to be added to the regular season, and that alone may not solve the problem. The goal remains for each team to play 16 regular season games -- eight home, eight away -- but that, too, could fall by the wayside as things evolve.

NFL announces multiple schedule changes

The NFL is reshuffling its schedule following Sunday's announcement that the Denver Broncos-New England Patriots game, already rescheduled for Monday night, was being postponed after another Patriots player tested positive for COVID-19.

The league announced Sunday afternoon a number of scheduling changes stemming from this week's postponement. Among them is that the Broncos-Patriots game will be moved to Week 6 on Sunday, Oct. 18 at 1 p.m. ET on CBS.

Seven other games were affected by the postponement:

The Kansas City Chiefs at Buffalo Bills Week 6 game moves from Thursday, Oct.15 to Monday, Oct. 19 at 5:00 p.m. ET on FOX/NFL Network/Amazon.

The New York Jets at Miami Dolphins game moves from Week 10 to Week 6 at 4:05 p.m. ET on CBS.

The Jets at Los Angeles Chargers game moves from Week 6 to Week 11 on Sunday, Nov. 22 at 4:05 p.m. ET on CBS.

The Jacksonville Jaguars at Chargers game moves from Week 8 to Week 7 on Sunday, Oct. 25 at 4:25 p.m. ET on CBS.

The Chargers at Broncos game moves from Week 11 to Week 8 on Sunday, Nov. 1 at 4:05 p.m. ET on CBS.

The Chargers at Dolphins game moves from Week 7 to Week 10 on Sunday, Nov. 15 at 4:05 p.m. ET on CBS.

The Dolphins at Broncos game moves from Week 6 to Week 11 at 4:05 p.m. ET on CBS.

As a result, six teams will now have different bye weeks.

Denver's bye week moves from Week 8 to Week 5; New England's bye week moves from Week 6 to Week 5; Los Angeles' bye week moves from Week 10 to Week 6; Miami's bye week moves from Week 11 to Week 7; Jacksonville's bye week moves from Week 7 to Week 8; and New York's bye week moves from Week 11 to Week 10.

Ten games have now been rescheduled to different weeks this season. Week 4's Pittsburgh Steelers-Tennessee Titans matchup was moved to Week 7 after multiple Titans players and personnel tested positive for COVID-19. As a result, Pittsburgh's game against the Baltimore Ravens was moved from Week 7 to Week 8.

Yeah, weird.......they could have easily inserted another game for TNF

I actually don't mind lol I split a contest entry with my brother and he is a degenerate, always wants to play the Thursday Game. I have told him with this covid shit, it's toooo risky to play the Thursday Game unless it's a mortal LOCK. end up doing a side and total parlay for him, keeps the junkie going.
